The paper “An automated approach to fully self-gated free-running cardiac and respiratory motion-resolved 5D whole-heart MRI” by Lorenzo Di Sopra, Davide Piccini, Simone Coppo, Matthias Stuber (CIBM), and Jérôme Yerly (CIBM) was selected as Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (MRM) Editor’s picks for December 2019. The MRM popularizes itself through news briefs, profiles of leaders in the field, and interviews with the authors of their Editor’s picks. Additionally, Lorenzo Di Sopra, Matthias Stuber, and Jérôme Yerly were featured in a MRM video Q&A.
About the paper:
In current clinical settings, cardiac MRI often suffers from both a limited ease‐of‐use and time inefficiency, which may hinder a more widespread use of cardiac MRI outside of dedicated academic centers with well‐trained and highly specialized personnel. In recent years, a wide range of solutions have been proposed to simplify the workflow. This paper was built on the ECG‐gated 5D whole‐heart MRI approach based on compressed sensing (CS) and respiratory self‐navigation, and developed the technique into an automated and optimized free‐running framework for fully SG cardiac and respiratory motion‐resolved noncontrast 5D imaging of the whole heart.
About the authors:
Lorenzo Di Sopra is a PhD student at the CardioVascular Magnetic Resonance research center (CVMR), headed by Matthias Stuber. Lorenzo joined the CVMR group in June 2016, where he is currently researching new methods for dynamic cardiac imaging.
Since December 2011, Davide Piccini is an employee of Siemens Switzerland and is responsible for research projects at CVMR as part of a collaboration between academia and industry.
Simone Coppo is a PhD student at Case Western Reserve University, CWRU, Department of Radiology (University Hospitals Case Medical Center).
Matthias Stuber is a Professor at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, Visiting Professor at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA, and an Invited Chair at Liryc, Bordeaux, France and Head of the CIBM Translational MR Imaging (CHUV-UNIL).
Jérôme Yerly is a CIBM Translational MR Imaging (CHUV-UNIL) Research Staff Scientist as well as a postdoctoral fellow at the CVMR (CHUV).
