On Thursday, November 14, 2024, the CIBM Center for Biomedical Imaging at EPFL transformed once again into a playground of discovery for three curious schoolchildren, aged 11 to 12, as part of the “Journée Oser Tous Les Métiers” (JOM) day. This annual event is all about smashing stereotypes and lighting the spark of scientific curiosity – one experiment at a time.

By 9:00 a.m., the stage was set, and three wide-eyed youngsters walked through CIBM’s doors, ready to explore the incredible world of biomedical imaging with questions buzzing in their minds – How can a machine see inside our bodies without opening us up? How can researchers still make new discoveries today? Breaking down barriers and building excitement, the session showed them that exploring the natural world isn’t just for grown-ups – it’s for anyone with a little curiosity.

For researchers, the day was more than just fun—it was a chance to hone the art of making complex science simple and engaging, a skill as vital as it is challenging.

The young visitors embarked on their first discovery adventure with Cristina Cudalbu, unraveling the mysteries of imaging as Mrs. Persimmon and Mr. Potato revealed intriguing anomalies. Next, they dived into the world of spectroscopy to explore a rodent brain up close. Then, thanks to Thanh Phong Lê group was introduced to the incredible 9.4 and 14 Tesla systems and could understand the strength of the MRI magnet in a tangible and memorable way. The excitement reached new heights when Estelle Gerossier introduced the group to three albino rats inside a spacious cage filled with soft bedding and fun tunnels, explaining all the measures to ensure that every aspect of the rats’ lives remain as stress-free and cozy as possible.

The day went on at the EPFL Innovation Park, filled with excitement and innovation shared by the Siemens Healthineers team of passionate scientists and engineers. The young explorers dove straight into building a detailed 3D model of an MRI scanner, bringing its intricate design to life. They then delved into a brain with abnormalities, uncovering how artificial intelligence can detect even the most subtle changes. The adventure continued with a virtual liver ablation and a deep dive into the groundbreaking concept of a digital twin. Next, they experienced a virtual MR scan of their entire body, amazed by how the technology mapped each organ in stunning detail. The day concluded with an intense and captivating quiz, testing their newfound knowledge in a fun and challenging way.

A huge thank you to the JOM initiative for championing events like this, which connect science with the next generation. By igniting young imaginations, we’re not just inspiring potential scientists—we’re shaping the future.
