Location: Online seminar
Seminar Chair: François Lazeyras, Head of CIBM MRI HUG-UNIGE Clinical MR Imaging Section
- 09:00 – 09:15 Welcome & Introduction
- 09:15 – 10:00: “Brain MRgFUS : review of physical principles, clinical status and recent clinical research”, by Salomir Rares Vincent, Department of Radiology and Medical Informatics, UNIGE & Division of Radiology, HUG
Focused ultrasound was suggested in the middle of XXth century as a non-invasive therapy, delivering sharply defined patterns of energy deep inside the body. Technological progress yielding large scale phased arrays of ultrasound sources and its coupling to magnetic resonance guidance and real time thermometry have enabled various medical applications. FDA approved and CE marked devices are available for localized thermal ablation of uterine fibroid, pain palliation of bone metastases, localized prostate cancer and neurological functional disorders (ET, PD). Beam focusing through the skull enabled incision-less MRgFUS thalamotomy, that is already recognized as an effective approach for single session permanent treatment of ED and some PD. Beside the current clinical application, recent reports addressed the feasibility and safety of BBB opening for local drug delivery in humans.
