09:00 – 09:30 MP2RAGE image synthesis for improved tissue and white matter and cortical lesion segmentation in multiple sclerosis patients

Abstract: Specialized MRI sequences such as the magnetization prepared 2 rapid acquisition gradient echoes (MP2RAGE) show a higher brain tissue and lesion contrast in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, including advanced biomarkers such as cortical lesions. However, these sequences are in most cases not acquired in the clinical practice yet and remain used in research settings. In this talk, I will first briefly introduce a MS white matter and cortical lesion segmentation framework based on FLAIR and MP2RAGE at 3T. Secondly, I will present an automated method, based on a generative adversarial network, to translate the conventional magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo imaging (MPRAGE) to synthetic MP2RAGE. Combining these two methods (for segmentation and image synthesis) we show that the synthetic images improve both the automated tissue and lesion segmentation in MS patients.

09:30 – 10:00 Improving HIFU with a New Perfluorocarbon Adjuvant

Abstract: The burgeoning technique of focused ultrasound provides alternative non-invasive surgical treatment options for a variety of conditions. This talk will discuss the application of a new type of fluorosurfactant perfluorocarbon emulsion that might be applied intravenously to improve the therapy. The technique is in the preclinical stage and studies continue for clinical translation. The talk will describe the background information, the main study results thus far, potential future clinical applications, and the route to the first feasibility study.
