The CIBM Annual Symposium 2025 took place on 1 December at the Auditoire Alex-F. Müller, University of Geneva, attracting 180 participants in person. The event featured seven keynote presentations and 57 scientific posters, demonstrating the current state of biomedical imaging research across Swiss institutions.
Opening Session and Strategic Overview
Dr. Pina Marziliano, CIBM Executive Director, opened by presenting the organizational growth and evolution of CIBM since her arrival in 2019. Key infrastructure developments presented included fundraising, acquisition and installation of the :
- TERRA.X 7T MRI at Campus Biotech Geneva (2022)
- Magnetom Prism Fit 3T MRI at UNIGE (2022)
- FreeMax Low Field 0.55T MRI at CHUV (2023)
- 9.4T MRI with PET insert at EPFL (2024)
- NanoScan PET/CT at HUG (2024)
- CIMA.X 3T MRI at HUG (2025)
Dr. Marziliano also outlined the achievements of the strategic objectives defined in the strategic roadmap 2020-2024 and hinted at the future fundraising campaign of the CIBM flagship project – TESSERACT Initiative.
Scientific Presentations
The symposium featured presentations covering diverse aspects of biomedical imaging covering topics in the 5 CIBM modules Data Science, EEG, MRI, Pre-Clinical Imaging and Signal Processing and by different members of the CIBM Community: Core, Affiliate, Associate and Alumni.
The morning session was chaired by Prof. Valentina Garibotto, Head of the CIBM PCI HUG-UNIGE Molecular Imaging Section
- Prof. Margret Schottelius (CHUV UNIL) presented on tracer development for nuclear theranostics, addressing both imaging and therapeutic applications in cancer treatment
- Dr. Ileana Jelescu (CHUV UNIL) discussed novel diffusion MRI approaches for mapping microstructure and brain activity
- Prof. Dimitrios Karampinos (CIBM MRI EPFL) covered state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging of the musculoskeletal system
The afternoon session was chaired by Dr. Jonas Richiardi, Head of the CIBM DS CHUV HUG Imaging for Precision Medicine Section
- Dr. Dorina Thanou (EPFL AI Center) presented on graph AI applications in medical imaging
- Dr. Tomas Ros (CIBM EEG HUG UNIGE) introduced GEDAI, a new algorithm for unsupervised denoising of contaminated EEG signals
- Dr. João Jorge (CSEM) discussed multimodal approaches from 7T imaging to wearable monitoring systems
- Prof. Dimitri Van De Ville (CIBM SP EPFL-UNIGE) presented signal processing approaches for brain and spinal cord imaging

Poster Sessions and Networking
The symposium included 57 poster presentations displayed throughout the day. These sessions provided opportunities for researchers to present their work and engage in scientific discussions. The poster sessions took place during the morning welcome breakfast, lunch break, and afternoon networking period. The list of posters is available here (PDF)
Infrastructure Visits
Following the main program, organized visits were conducted to the new CIBM infrastructure at HUG, specifically the CIMA.X 3T MRI and Nanoscan PET/CT facilities.
The event concluded with networking opportunities, allowing participants from CHUV, UNIL, EPFL, UNIGE, HUG and other institutions to discuss potential collaborations and future research directions.

As the event drew to a close, the CIBM team extended heartfelt thanks to all speakers, attendees, and partners who contributed to the success of the symposium.
