The CIBM Continuing Education Course 2025 on Multimodal Imaging and the 3Rs in Preclinical Research opened with an impressive audience. The hybrid session, held on 15 September, 2025 at EPFL Lausanne and online via Zoom, brought together 65 participants on zoom&on-site.
Organized by the CIBM Pre-Clinical Imaging EPFL Section, and CPG members in in collaboration with ResAL:

This course was designed for researchers and PhD students interested in multimodal biomedical imaging in their preclinical studies.
The event featured expert lectures by Cristina Cudalbu, Bernard Lanz, Katarzyna Pierzchala, and Julie Parchet-Piccand.
The speakers introduced cutting-edge imaging technologies and their applications in advancing the 3Rs principles: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement in animal research. Topics included non-invasive MRI/MRS, PET, metabolic modelling, oxidative stress and inflammation, as well as practical guidance for animal experimentation in Switzerland.
The strong participation reflects the growing interest in multimodal imaging as a key driver for more ethical and effective preclinical research.
The course will continue with a hands-on practical session (date to be defined), where a limited group of participants will attend in-vivo preclinical MRI/MRS scanning session, surgical and welfare considerations, anaesthesia and monitoring protocols, and in-vivo data acquisition.
The inaugural course was a resounding success, and we’re pleased to announce that it will return in 2026.
