Faire faux pour penser juste

On Tuesday, 29 September, in the Tinguely Espace of the Rolex Learning Center at EPFL, Lausanne, CIBM Flagship Project Officer Solange Denervaud will give a lecture entitled “Faire faux pour penser juste”.

Our learning experiences shape our relationship with error, exploration and uncertainty. This lecture offers a neuroscientific perspective on educational environments, from primary school to university, as ecosystems that influence motivation, adaptation and the way we learn. Research in neuroscience and developmental psychology shows that these structures, particularly assessment methods, are not neutral: They steer learning towards error avoidance, performance optimisation and competition. In a context that values both excellence and innovation, a tension arises: how can we explore when mistakes come at a cost, and what are the implications for mental health? This lecture invites us to rethink these environments and poses a central question: what sort of minds are we shaping?
