7T MRI Seminar: Pushing the limits with innovative RF technologies for neuro and body applications in MRI at 7T

Abstract

In the early days of 7T MRI, radio frequency (RF) fields used to be a cause of serious headaches for many researchers and clinicians. Although, in the last two decades, the community managed to address some of the fundamental challenges, there is still a lot of room for RF innovations that could help to push the boundaries of ultrahigh field MRI. In this presentation, I will talk about the current challenges and promising solutions in RF technology development for MRI at 7T, focusing on neuro and body applications. I will present recent and ongoing projects from our laboratory at EPFL, exploring advanced strategies such as dielectric resonators, dipole antennas, flexible coils, multi-nuclear coils, and hybrid systems for combined transcranial focused ultrasound neuromodulation and MRI.

Daniel Wenz is a medical physicist and a radio frequency engineer. In 2014, he graduated in medical physics at AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland. Then, he moved to Germany to pursue his PhD at Berlin Ultrahigh Field Facility at Max Delbrueck Center for Molecular Medicine, obtaining his degree from Charité Medical University. In 2019, he joined CIBM Center for Biomedical Imaging at EPF Lausanne, where he works as a research staff scientist. His research focuses on different aspects of ultrahigh field MRI such as radio frequency technology development, physiometabolic MRI, as well as hybrid systems for treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases using transcranial focused ultrasound neuromodulation.
