Ivan Diaz obtained his PhD from the University of Lausanne in Life Sciences where he focused on modeling human detection of signals in medical images with the aim of decreasing the dose to the patient in CT imaging. He has worked at the Inselspital in Bern applying geometric deep learning to achieve full 3D-rotation equivariance in segmentation networks to detect multiple sclerosis and cancer lesions in brain MRIs. He has also worked as part of the HORAO project which aims to harness imaging Mueller Polarimetry to aid brain surgeons in distinguishing healthy brain tissue from tumorous tissue during surgery. He has joined the CIBM in January 2026 to work on projects related to child brain development and in applying deep learning algorithms for body pose estimation and emotion detection as part of a larger set of studies aiming to investigate the link between Heart Rate Variability, respiration and brain connectivity in various tasks.
