On January 17th, 2024, Felix Tobias Kurz, Associate Physician, Head of the HUG Diagnostic Neuroradiology Unit, shared his talk on “Structural and functional oncological imaging at ultra-high field MRI: current challenges” at the Campus Biotech in Geneva.
The gain in resolution as well as the extended arsenal of functional imaging techniques at ultra-high field MRI may drive the ever-increasing specificity and complexity of oncological imaging. While a characterization of the tumor microenvironment with non-invasive imaging, as well as detection of early tumor recurrence or therapy-related local changes in microvasculature may be resolved at ultra-high-field MRI to aid in tumor grading and prognosis, ultimately benefitting oncological patients, the translation into clinical routine is still challenging. Correlative, although experimental, approaches with combined ultra-microscopy may improve confidence in imaging findings, and further a deeper understanding of multimodal MRI signatures in oncological disease. The presentation introduces some of the current concepts in structural and functional oncological imaging at ultra-high field MRI, with a focus on neuroimaging.

Before coming to the service of neuroradiology at HUG, Professor Felix Kurz worked as an attending physician, research group leader (microstructural imaging), and head of clinical 7T MRI at the Division of Radiology of the German Cancer Research Center. His research covers topics in quantitative MR imaging and biophysics with a focus on diffusion effects in MRI, peripheral nerve imaging, neurooncological imaging, and biophysical modeling.
