DESCRIPTION:The nineteenth edition of the Breakfast and Science Seminar Series will virtual.\nDate and time: Tuesday October 26th, 2021 – 9:00 to 10:30 CET\nLocation:  Virtual on Zoom.\nProgram\n09:00 – 09:15 Welcome & Introduction\n09:15 – 10:00  Seeing while hearing: altered audio-visual interactions in patients with cochlear implants\n\nPascale Sandmann,\nHead of “Audiology and Pediatric Audiology” and Head of the research group “EEG and Audiological Diagnostics” at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, University Hospital Cologne, Cologne, Germany\nAbstract\n\nCochlear implants (CI) can restore the hearing in individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss by direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. However, after implantation, the CI patients need to adapt to the highly artificial input provided by the CI. In my lecture, I am going to present different studies which have used EEG and other neuroimaging techniques to examine brain plasticity before and after cochlear implantation. These studies have shown experience-related cortical alterations in both the auditory and the visual cortex, as well as changes in the interaction between the auditory and visual system of CI patients.\nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Sandmann obtained a PhD in Neuroscience at the Neuroscience Center Zurich (ETH Zurich and University of Zurich) in 2009. She worked as a Post-Doc at the University of Oldenburg (Germany) and as a Junior Professor (W1) at the Hannover Medical School (Germany). In 2015, she moved to the University Hospital Cologne (Germany) where she set up her own research group “EEG and Audiological Diagnostics” and where she is now the Head of “Audiology and Pediatric Audiology” at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology. Dr. Sandmann has been awarded numerous research grants, including the support from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), the German Research Foundation (DFG), and industrial partners. Furthermore, this year she was awarded the prestigious KIND Hearing Foundation Award for her outstanding scientific work.\nOne focus of Dr. Sandmann’s research is the study of cortical changes induced by auditory deprivation and cochlear implantation, and the examination of their contribution to the rehabilitation success after implantation. Dr. Sandmann is particularly interested in the better understanding of the individual factors that cause the high variability in CI outcome.
